Thanks to Sam from Q Security Systems for a great day out at the Australian 2016 Phillip Island MotoGP.
The day started early with a bit of a drive down to the Island, arriving in plenty of time to see the first practice session of the day for Moto3. The miserable Melbourne weather deterred me from riding down to ‘The Island’ on my gorgeous new Ducati Hypermotard 939 SP. The Saturday session was more winter than spring, and early indications on Sunday morning was that there may be a bit more rain to come. Alas, by the end of the MotoGP proper on Sunday afternoon the skies had cleared and there was enough in the sun to send me home a tad burnt.
Seeing these guys barrel around the track in real life, ie, not on TV, really gives you an appreciation for the tremendous skill and daring required to ride these machines; there is no doubt I am way off that level, but I enjoy the adrenalin rush of pushing my bike to it’s limits on our local highways and back roads nonetheless.
The big bike race started out predictably enough, and a third of the way through it was looking like Marquez was going to win by a fair stretch. Yawn! But, on lap 10 he came off and the race opened up again. Cal Crutchlow prevailed for his second career win, with legend Valentino Rossi in second. Yay for the little guy (metaphoric, not literal). Before the race we all had a dip at picking the 5th placed rider, and my guy Pol Espargaro did me proud
We are planning a trip back to Phillip Island in February 2017 for the WorldSBK Championship, so if you want to get involved get in touch with me via the Contact Us page, or leave a comment on this blog post.
